The Barn Owl

Founded in 2014, The Barn Owl is a unique and primitive country decor store that supports locally made items; this distinctive store is also the home of Nerissa’s Wood Crafts which hosts woodworking classes 6 days a week! Whether you are in the mood to shop for specialty country decor items, or attend a class to create your own personalized wood craft decor – The Barn Owl is your one stop shop!

Store owner, Richelle Jomha said “Life is short, take a chance and do what you love!”  This sparked her motivation to take a leap and start her journey into entrepreneurism after a courageous battle with cancer. The Barn Owl has been thriving for 3 years now supporting 30 local vendors and wholesaling to several stores in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. With hard work and a good attitude, business owner Richelle expects sales to keep increasing year over year.

The uniqueness of this store is created by the inviting atmosphere and the local/ rural flavour of the products. With the store location in the heart of downtown Stony Plain, this store embodies the culture the Town thrives for.  Richelle believes opening a business in Stony Plain is made easier by the support received from the Town staff. Whether the Town is helping to promote new business ideas, holding photo shoots at the store to publish in local magazines, hosting CultureFWD events at the business location, maintaining the front of the store curb, or even adding an ashtray on the light post – the Town is always there to provide the business community support.

Some advice this business offers to people contemplating opening a business in Stony Plain is to simply: “Take a chance and do it!” Store owner Richelle is always willing to talk with anyone thinking about opening a new business within the community, she believes offering local support helps to promote a successful community. When asked if she would have done anything different, Richelle stated she would have done it sooner!
